Anxiety / Nervous System
Anxiety often grows not just from what happens but from how quickly we react to what happens
I can notice the thought without entering into it.
I can feel the reaction without becoming the reaction.
Reality
• I feel activated, tense and unsettled
• I feel anxious, activated, and pulled into reacting to what’s happening around me. This situation (health, relationship, uncertainty) is triggering a response in me.
• My mind is running ahead into ‘what if scenarios’. I feel pulled into uncertainty and fear.
Anchored Truth
• “I don’t have to fix this instantly. My system can settle as I stay anchored and present.”
• “My body is responding, not failing. I don’t have to react to every trigger. I can remain anchored even while things are happening.”
• “I am not required to follow every emotional surge. I can live from steadiness instead of constant reaction. Slowing down is not avoidance, it is alignment.”
• “These thoughts feel real, but they are not reality. I don’t have to follow every ‘what if’ my mind produces. I can stay present and anchored instead of trying to solve a future that hasn’t happened.”
• “Peace grows when I stop rehearsing futures that haven’t been given to me.”
Scripture
Philippians 4:7 - And the peace of God, which surpasses all comprehension, will guard your hearts and minds in Christ Jesus.
- The peace of God goes beyond what our mind can fully calculate, control, explain or logically hold.
- The peace of God cannot be fully produced, contained or explained by our reasoning alone.
- The peace of God often comes before understanding and often remains even if we have incomplete understanding.
- God's peace is superior and reigns over and above the mind's frantic attempts to control & explain everything.
* Surpassing peace does not mean we will never struggle mentally. It does mean that the presence of God (Himself with us) will sustain us through the struggle.
2 Timothy 1:7 - For God has not given us a spirit of timidity, but of power and love and discipline.
- Paul is nurturing his own inner life in vs 3 through 6 as a great example to Timothy leading up to his encouragement in vs 7.
- Paul is using words such as, "I remember you, longing to see you, I call to remembrance, I am persuaded, desiring to see you, mindful of your tears."
- Paul encourages Timothy to stir up the gift of God which is exactly what he modeled in his own life in the prior verses.
- Paul is aware of the heaviness life can bring. He knows how easily we can retreat into timidity, shrinking back and experience loss of boldness and become passive and discouraged as a result.
- We don't generate vibrant spiritual life. We DO turn our attention toward God and kindle (as with burning coals) the fire within that God has started and fan the flames to breathe again with life.
* Faithful people experience trembling, sorrow, distress, despair and bodily weakness. Even Paul talks about how he was under great pressure, far beyond the ability to endure (2 Cor. 1:8). Fear squeezes the soul. By the Spirit, we fan the burning embers of God in us. His power & love work to open us up, much like a butterfly opens and spreads its beautiful wings and moves gently through the air. The process of self discipline is nurtured in this and grounds us upon a path of growth and life.
Isaiah 41:10 - ‘Do not fear, for I am with you; Do not be afraid, for I am your God. I will strengthen you, I will also help you, I will also uphold you with My righteous right hand.’
Isaiah 26:3 - “The steadfast of mind You will keep in perfect peace, Because he trusts in You. Trust in the LORD forever, For in GOD the LORD, we have an everlasting Rock.”
James 1:19 - You know this, my beloved brothers and sisters. Now everyone must be quick to hear, slow to speak, and slow to anger
Psalm 112:7 - He will not fear bad news; His heart is steadfast, trusting in the LORD.
Matthew 6:34 - “So do not worry about tomorrow; for tomorrow will worry about itself. Each day has enough trouble of its own.
2 Corinthians 10:5 - We are destroying arguments and all arrogance raised against the knowledge of God, and we are taking every thought captive to the obedience of Christ
Psalm 94:19 - When my anxious thoughts multiply within me, Your comfort delights my soul.
Proverbs 3:5-6 - Trust in the LORD with all your heart And do not lean on your own understanding. In all your ways acknowledge Him, And He will make your paths straight.
