A living sacrifice?

Living-sacrifice

Recently, in a small prayer gathering with some dear friends, the Lord painted a beautiful picture of Romans 12: 1,2 in a remarkable way.  Just when I think the Lord has shown me all that needs to be seen on a particular subject or area of growth - BAM! - he reveals even more.  There seems to be a pattern to this.  As I've shared before, our loving heavenly Father is all about the process and growth comes from the messiness of life and it's various challenges and pressures.  So, for most of my years on this earth, I've conditioned myself to handle life from a place of emotion and feelings.  This is not uncommon and a very easy thing to do because it really doesn't require discipline and self control.  You plan, measure and respond from how you feel about a  situation or particular person and act accordingly.  It's easy to be swept away by what our feelings tell us.  Unfortunately feelings and emotions are fickle and often mislead us and keep us off balance when it comes from the nature of the flesh.

When I look at the life of Jesus, he was so steady and balanced.  I would look at Jesus and say, "wow, there is a rock solid guy who is grounded, disciplined and knows his course."  How was Jesus this way and how can we expect to live with that same steadiness?  Well, let's take a closer look at the scripture from Romans:  Therefore, I urge you brethren, by the mercies of God, to present your bodies a living and holy sacrifice, acceptable to God, which is your spiritual service of worship.  What does that even mean and how do I actually live this out day by day?

I'm glad you asked.  What we do in the boring, everyday stuff of this life matters.  What if I simplified this and said most of our days are filled with decisions to make choices with 2 basic options?  Will you make choices based on 1.) Feelings or 2.) Faith?  We've already talked about the consequences of making decisions based on feelings.  I like to refer to this as the "washing machine" of life.  Making feeling choices just tosses you back and forth like your stuck in a bad spin cycle and leaves you frustrated, discouraged and flat out exhausted.

This is getting a bit long so I'm going to cut this off and continue with a new blog on what it looks like, practically, to escape the "feeling" life, embracing the "faith" life and how that works into Romans 12.
