The Fear of the Lord

Reverence / Awe / Honor – A submissive attitude toward God

What we fear….becomes our god

Acts 9:31 - So the church throughout Judea, Galilee, and Samaria enjoyed peace, as it was being built up; and as it continued in the fear of the Lord and in the comfort of the Holy Spirit, it kept increasing. ** (the key to church growth!)

Ephesians 5:21 - and subject yourselves to one another in the fear of Christ.

Isaiah 11:1-5 - Then a shoot will spring from the stem of Jesse, and a branch from his roots will bear fruit.  The Spirit of the LORD will rest on Him, the spirit of wisdom and understanding, the spirit of counsel and strength, the spirit of knowledge and the fear of the LORD.  And He will delight in the fear of the LORD, and He will not judge by what His eyes see, nor make decisions by what His ears hear; but with righteousness He will judge the poor, and decide with fairness for the humble of the earth; and He will strike the earth with the rod of His mouth, and with the breath of His lips He will slay the wicked.  Also righteousness will be the belt around His hips, and faithfulness the belt around His waist.  ** (see revelation 4:5 and Revelation 5:6 about the 7 Spirits)

Isaiah 33:6 – And He will be the stability of your times, a wealth of salvation, wisdom, and knowledge; the fear of the LORD is his treasure.

1 Peter 1:15-19 - but like the Holy One who called you, be (ginomai which means to emerge or become; to transition from one point or realm to another) holy (like the Lord in nature) yourselves also in all your behavior (change of outward behavior from inner beliefs); because it is written: “YOU SHALL BE HOLY, FOR I AM HOLY.”  If you address as Father the One who impartially judges according to each one’s work, conduct yourselves in fear during the time of your stay on earth; knowing that you were not redeemed with perishable things like silver or gold from your futile way of life inherited from your forefathers, but with precious blood, as of a lamb unblemished and spotless, the blood of Christ. **(fear for believers.)

Proverbs 1:7 - The fear of the LORD is the beginning of knowledge; fools despise wisdom and instruction.

Proverbs 1:20-33 - Wisdom shouts in the street, she raises her voice in the public square; at the head of the noisy streets she cries out; at the entrance of the gates in the city she declares her sayings:  “How long, you naive ones, will you love simplistic thinking?  How long will scoffers delight themselves in scoffing and fools hate knowledge?  “Turn to my rebuke, behold, I will pour out my spirit on you; I will make my words known to you.  “Because I called and you refused, I stretched out my hand and no one paid attention; and you neglected all my advice and did not want my rebuke; I will also laugh at your disaster; I will mock when your dread comes, when your dread comes like a storm and your disaster comes like a whirlwind, when distress and anguish come upon you.  “Then they will call on me, but I will not answer; they will seek me diligently but will not find me, because they hated knowledge and did not choose the fear of the LORD.  “They did not accept my advice, they disdainfully rejected every rebuke from me.  “So they shall eat of the fruit of their own way, and be filled with their own schemes.  “For the faithlessness of the naive will kill them, and the complacency of fools will destroy them.  “But whoever listens to me will live securely and will be at ease from the dread of evil.”

Proverbs 2:1-5 - My son, (if) you will receive my words and treasure my commandments within you, make your ear attentive to wisdom; incline your heart to understanding.  For (if) you cry out for insight, and raise your voice for understanding; (if) you seek her as silver and search for her as for hidden treasures; (then) you will understand the fear of the LORD, and discover the knowledge of God.

Proverbs 3:6-8 - In all your ways acknowledge Him, and He will make your paths straight.  Do not be wise in your own eyes; fear the LORD and turn away from evil.  It will be healing to your body and refreshment to your bones.

Proverbs 10:27 - The fear of the LORD prolongs life, but the years of the wicked will be shortened.

Proverbs 14:26 - In the fear of the LORD there is strong confidence, and his children will have refuge.

Proverbs 19:23 - The fear of the LORD leads to life, so that one may sleep satisfied, untouched by evil.

Proverbs 23:17 - Do not let your heart envy sinners (offender, criminal), but live in the fear of the LORD always.

Psalm 2:11 - Serve the LORD with reverence and rejoice with trembling.

Psalm 19:9,10 - The fear of the LORD is clean, enduring forever; the judgments of the LORD are true; they are righteous altogether.  They are more desirable than gold, yes, than much pure gold; sweeter also than honey and drippings of the honeycomb.

Psalm 25:12-14 - Who is the person who fears the LORD?  He will instruct him in the way he should choose.  His soul will dwell in prosperity, and his descendants will inherit the land.  The secret of the LORD is for those who fear Him, and He will make them know His covenant.

Psalm 34:11-14 - Come, you children, listen to me; I will teach you the fear of the LORD.  Who is the person who desires life and loves length of days, that he may see good?  Keep your tongue from evil and your lips from speaking deceit.  Turn from evil and do good; seek peace and pursue it.
