Emotions

Triggers in life set off a chain of reactions.

  1. We quickly interpret the trigger as good or bad.
  2. Our emotional chemicals go to work.
  3. Thoughts about the trigger begin to form feelings and sets the overall tone of our mood.

Emotional reaction comes first and then feelings are formed.  Our minds form quick judgements of situations and the chain reaction begins.  This process changes what our bodies feel.

What leads to the transformation of our feelings?

Typically changes in our emotional life happen organically and isn’t a product of our effort or will power.  Living an abiding life in God, immersed in His love and holiness, partaking of His divine nature and growing in faith is the process that brings true and lasting transformation.

Imagination

Developing our imagination is key if we want to see things in new ways.  We become “locked in” to seeing things the same way every day.  The saying, “stuck in a rut” adequately describes how we get into limited and unhealthy mindsets that keep us from growing.  We must look beyond what is noticeable and see what must be discerned.

Jesus’ gospel teachings challenge us to see things in His light.  Circumstances often feel overwhelming and we become a prisoner to our emotions but we do good to remember that God is inviting us to imagine an alternate reality filled with Him no matter the situation.

Consider these three important truths to understand about the role of emotions in your life:

  1. Emotions are good when they reflect the character of Christ.
  2. Emotions are bad when they are dominated by the flesh.
  3. Emotions can be twisted by Satan and his lies.

Emotions are part of the human experience.

God created us to have emotions & feelings. The enemy cannot create but can only distort and twist what God has created for good.

God is trying to get our attention.  Remember, being immersed and abiding in Him as our lifestyle is how this happens…it isn’t a “one and done” thing we do only when we have cares and worries.

The enemy wants us to deny and push down difficult emotions because it will ultimately lead to destroying progress and relationships if we don’t face it.  1 Peter 5:7 calls us to cast our cares and anxieties on Him because He cares!

God is inviting us into His refuge; calling us to come and soak in His presence.  When this is our lifestyle, cares and pain cannot cripple us.  As Paul states in 2 Corinthians 4, hard pressed, not crushed, perplexed but not in despair, struck down but not destroyed.  God, our Father, knows us intimately.  He created us.  Jesus knows our struggles.  Hebrews 4 says He sympathizes with our weakness and was tempted just as we are.  God is inviting us, through our emotions, into a deeper faith and trust in Him.

Emotional reaction is a loud cry for the Holy Spirit’s direction.

An intense emotional state is ripe for the enemy to move in and begin spewing his lies and weaving distortion.

Key:  The enemy, and our flesh, wants us to “zero in” and really set our minds on the sensation of the moment.  We must learn to look beyond that sensation, to imagine, to discern what is better, what is God’s way.

Look deeper than the emotion

  • What could be beneath anger? Stress, worry, fear, pain, frustration, loneliness, embarrassment, resentment.
  • What could be beneath sadness? Disappointment, illness, regret, loss, being overwhelmed, confusion.

Pray and ask God what may be beneath your emotions.  Once this is exposed, revelation can flow and healing can take place.

Is there a lie attached to the emotion?

What are ways we might respond when faced with a heightened emotion?

  • The world’s ways are different from God’s ways. One way to respond is to follow the world’s advice in dealing with the sensation so we may feel better.
  • God’s way is turn to the Holy Spirit within, discern what is better, to imagine an alternate ending that lines up with His word.
  • Ask the Holy Spirit to walk me through it.
  • Ask the Holy Spirit to use the emotions, the sensations, to shape you into an instrument for God’s glory.

Feelings are not right or wrong.  Our perceptions or judgments that led to feelings, however, may be worldly or Godly.

What thoughts are generated when you read the following scriptural truths?  Don’t solely base your thoughts on feelings alone but look at them in light of what you intellectually know to be true.  When you read them, does it fill you with light and bring about a deep breathy sigh of confidence, hope, relief and joy?  When you read them, does the truth of what you’re reading fall flat; is it unable to leave the confines of the mind and fill the soul?  Feelings aren’t meant to be kept in a vacuum but to be embraced within biblical truth.  To believe God’s promises is one thing, to work them into your inner self (soul & spirit) so the Holy Spirit can impart faith is entirely something else.

Additional Scriptures

Colossians 4:2 - Continue earnestly in prayer, being vigilant in it with thanksgiving.

How do we stay steady?  Live with gratitude.  Engage the imagination, dwell on the character of God (see “names of God” in the tool box), let thankfulness rise up, let hope for the future take hold.  This all makes up and flows into authentic prayer.

Proverbs 4:23 - Keep your heart with all diligence, For out of it spring the issues of life.

This aligns with Romans 12:1 (…present your bodies as a living sacrifice….)  The heart speaks of our inner person.  What are our desires?  What motivates us?  What are our thoughts and the overall focus of our mindset?  The mind is like a diving board.  It provides the platform and the spring that puts us into motion by which we engage in life and relationships.
