New Covenant
The New Covenant
New Testament: Through the death and resurrection of Jesus Christ, God the Father made a new covenant with the Church; His people, who repent – believe – and follow Jesus. By this, we are rescued out of the kingdom of darkness and brought into the kingdom of light. Through Jesus Christ our sins are forgiven, we have a new heart and we become a new creation where old things are passed away and all things have become new.
Old Testament foreshadowing:
Deuteronomy 30:6 - And the LORD your God will circumcise your heart and the heart of your descendants, to love the LORD your God with all your heart and with all your soul, that you may live.
Ezekiel 36:26-28 - I will give you a new heart and put a new spirit within you; I will take the heart of stone out of your flesh and give you a heart of flesh. I will put My Spirit within you and cause you to walk in My statutes, and you will keep My judgments and do them. Then you shall dwell in the land that I gave to your fathers; you shall be My people, and I will be your God.
Jeremiah 31:31-34 - "Behold, the days are coming, says the LORD, when I will make a new covenant with the house of Israel and with the house of Judah— not according to the covenant that I made with their fathers in the day that I took them by the hand to lead them out of the land of Egypt, My covenant which they broke, though I was a husband to them, says the LORD. But this is the covenant that I will make with the house of Israel after those days, says the LORD: I will put My law in their minds, and write it on their hearts; and I will be their God, and they shall be My people. No more shall every man teach his neighbor, and every man his brother, saying, 'Know the LORD,' for they all shall know Me, from the least of them to the greatest of
them, says the LORD. For I will forgive their iniquity, and their sin I will remember no more."
New Testament Scriptures:
1 Corinthians 11:24-29 - and when He had given thanks, He broke it and said, "Take, eat; this is My body which is broken for you; do this in remembrance of Me." In the same manner He also took the cup after supper, saying, "This cup is the new covenant in My blood. This do, as often as you drink it, in remembrance of Me." For as often as you eat this bread and drink this cup, you proclaim the Lord's death till He comes. Therefore whoever eats this bread or drinks this cup of the Lord in an unworthy manner will be guilty of the body and blood of the Lord. But let a man examine himself, and so let him eat of the bread and drink of the cup. For he who eats and drinks in an unworthy manner eats and drinks judgment to himself, not discerning the Lord's body.
2 Corinthians 3:6-18 Ministers of the New Covenant
- Ministers of the new covenant, by the Spirit (not the law), for the Spirit gives life.
- The children of Israel could not look at the face of Moses because of the passing glory that was upon him, how much MORE glorious will be the ministry of the Spirit?
- By this we have such hope and we use great boldness of speech.
- The minds of those under the OT covenant are blinded. This veil is taken away in Christ.
- The Lord is the Spirit; and where the Spirit of the Lord is, there is freedom.
- With unveiled face, beholding as in a mirror the glory of the Lord, we are being transformed into the same image from glory to glory, just as by the Spirit of the Lord. -- As we spend time with Him, in His word, worshipping and learning, we are changed and become like Him.
Hebrews 9:11-28 Redemption through the Blood of Christ
- In the OT, the priest inspected the lamb (not the person). If it was found to be without spot or blemish, the person could worship confidently. In the new covenant, Christ came as High Priest and is the perfect tabernacle. Through Christ, the perfect lamb, we can come before the Father confidently in the righteousness of Christ Jesus.
- By His blood, He obtained eternal redemption and cleansed our conscience from dead works to serve the living God.
- Death of the testator (person who has made a will) is necessary for there to be a testament in force. It has no power as the testator lives.
- Even the Old Covenant involved the blood of calves and goats.
- According to the law, almost all things are purified with blood. Without blood there is no remission (cancellation of debt / forgiveness of sins).
- The old system is based on copies of the authentic. Christ (the authentic), entered into heaven itself to appear in the presence of God for us to put away sin once and for all by the sacrifice of Himself.
- Christ was offered once to bear the sins of many. He will appear a second time, apart from sin, for salvation.
